Best rehabilitation care in the country is still close to home

Rehabilitation staff at Southern Illinois Healthcare recently celebrated the announcement that its affiliate in rehabilitation, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, was named Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America by "U.S. News and World Report" for the sixteenth year in a row.

Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Southern Illinois Healthcare have worked together since 1996 to bring nationally ranked rehabilitation services to over 5,000 patients needing acute rehabilitation, helping them stay close to home while recovering from stroke, injury, orthopedic surgery and other conditions requiring rehabilitation.

This alliance has grown from rehabilitation for severe injury and stroke at Herrin Hospital to include a full range of services for thousands of patients at Southern Illinois Healthcare including outpatient therapy, aquatic therapy, sports medicine and women’s health rehabilitation.

“At SIH hospitals and centers from Anna-Jonesboro to West Frankfort, patients receive that same level of quality rehabilitation care provided by RIC,” explained Terrence Glennon, medical director of SIH-RIC Rehabilitation Services.

The U.S. News and World Report rehabilitation rankings are determined by a survey of board-certified physiatrists (specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation), who are asked to identify those hospitals that are the leaders in their specialty without regard to location or cost.

They have chosen Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago every year since 1991. It is the only hospital in Illinois to ever be ranked #1 in any specialty and no other specialty hospital in America has been ranked #1 for as long.

The Institute has more than 30 sites of care, including Herrin Hospital. Doctors and therapists at SIH benefit from the ongoing training and research conducted by RIC, including its physiatry program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

While trusted for treating the most complex cases such as brain injury and stroke, the SIH-RIC alliance brings the same level of expertise to helping those with more common conditions including arthritis, chronic pain and sports injuries.

Rehabilitation Institute, with SIH, has built a home in southern Illinois, and southern Illinoisans continue to have trusted rehabilitation right here at home.

The SIH-RIC alliance includes the Acute Rehabilitation Center at Herrin Hospital plus inpatient and outpatient services at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and Herrin Hospital. The alliance also operates Fit For Work and Rehab Unlimited sites in Carbondale, Herrin, West Frankfort and Anna.
