Interventional Cardiology (Angioplasty & Stent Placement)

Not every person with heart disease is a candidate for open-heart, bypass surgery. Quite often, there are other ways of clearing a blockage by using different interventional heart procedures, including angioplasty and stent placement. These procedures all take place in the Prairie Heart Institute Memorial Hospital of Carbondale cardiac catheterization laboratory.

Typically, through cardiac catherterization, a cardiologist will determine the urgency of the heart problem and determine which procedure is right for the patient. There are times when treatment with medications alone is sufficient. Other times, however, intervention with angioplasty or stenting will have to be done immediately to prevent or to stop a heart attack. This happens when there is a severe blockage in a big artery in the heart. An interventional procedure, such as angioplasty, can be done right away while the person is in the catheterization lab.

Angioplasty, performed at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, is probably the most effective treatment in the event of a heart attack. But, treatment for heart attacks actually begins in the local emergency room. That’s why our heart professionals work very closely with local emergency rooms in Herrin, Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, DuQuoin, Benton, Harrisburg and Anna. This Prairie StatHeart program ensures that heart attack patients are stabilized, transferred to Memorial and treated with angioplasty in a goal time of 90 minutes or less. That’s half the time it takes many hospitals in the US.

Prairie Heart Institute Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is the leader in deep southern Illinois providing coronary angioplasty and stenting. For the people PHI-MHC serves it means not having to travel long distances for complete cardiac care. It means that lives of southern Illinoisans can be saved.
