In the event that a surgical procedure is needed, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is equipped and staffed to care for you or your loved one.
The open heart surgery program began in 2001 and has successfully served thousands of southern Illinois patients. Much of that success is due to the experienced staff. In addition, the surgical technicians, nurses and support staff at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, who care for you from pre-operative care, to surgery and post-operative recovery, are among the best trained in the region.
Cardiac surgeons Kenneth Saum, MD and Douglas Wallace, MD are a part of SIU Health Care Cardiothoracic Surgery. Living in southern Illinois, they serve as the primary cardiac surgeons at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Other SIU surgeons practice in Springfield and serve in Carbondale as needed.
Quality has been the reason for the success of the surgical program. "This is a university-level program," said Dr. Ken Saum, which means there is a higher level of skill and training than one might expect in a small-town setting. "I'm proud to be a member of this team."
SIU Physicians and Surgeons work in conjunction with cardiologists from Prairie Cardiovascular. These highly-trained and experienced heart specialists serve patients in hospitals, offices and clinics at several locations in southern Illinois.
