The Southern Illinois Respiratory Disease Program, provides services for persons with existing breathing problems and helps others learn to avoid conditions which could lead to lung damage. The program specializes in serving active and former coal miners. Persons with breathing problems due to other factors can also receive care.
Herrin Hospital, through its Respiratory Disease Clinic, provides diagnostic testing, medical examination, individualized treatment and patient education programs.
The Southern Illinois Respiratory Disease Program is partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These funds are administered by Shawnee Health Service and Development Corporation, a not-for-profit organization located in Carterville, Illinois, that is involved in the development of health care and social service delivery systems in southern Illinois.
